We shy away from such a specific genre tag because, for the most part, the music created by our artists lacks the "D" of IDM...yes, dance. That trend changes with Another Electronic Musician's latest album "Five", Jase Rex's fifth release under the n5MD group of labels. Five puts the dance back into Intelligent Dance Music through the fusion of Techno, House, Electro, and Jazz with Rex's now signature sculpted sound. EXCLUSIVE.  "Vell Vagranz" is Don and Roel Funcken's first full CD of original material under the Funckarma alias since 2006's "Bion Glent" (Sublight). This new album shows Funckarma at their most diverse by folding in other electronic music sub-genres into their already potent mix. Ambient, Drum and Bass, Dubstep, Hip Hop, Downtempo, and even some Post-Industrial motifs are all drawn into the Funckarma vortex to be reformed into the alien sonic shroud that embodies their trademark zig-zag suture stitched beats, frenetic basswork and lush emotional gauze. EXCLUSIVE.  Once a band has developed a sound that is undeniably theirs it can be difficult to push beyond those confines and expand the sound into new territory. Lights Out Asia set out to do just that and have succeeded in writing a record that was as much a sign of the times as it was an expansion of their aural bubble that has been their watermark. They have been called ethereal, post-shoegaze and sleep-rock, but on their third full length "Eyes Like Brontide" the band slides into a darker more ominous and less lucid dream than on previous efforts. The release is a stylistic shift from the sweet lullabies of their debut "Garmonia" (Sun Sea Sky) and the electronic drum driven post-shoegaze of 2007's "Tanks and Recognizers" (n5MD). The song dynamics on the album deserve special attention. For the first time in Lights Out Asia's history they have gone for broke with some of the most epic drum machine driven post-rock this side of the Pacific along with solemn disconnected passages of dream nourished sonics. The occasional floating vocal and dusty winding guitar they are known for are still present, but "Eyes Like Brontide" brings a whole new dimension to the Lights Out Asia ethos. Most importantly, the band has expanded upon its sound without throwing away the original blueprint or alienating it's fanbase. "Eyes Like Brontide" is recommended for fans of Hammock, Bitcrush, Robin Guthrie and Manual.

NEAR THE PARENTHESIS - L'Eixample  CD (n5MD: MD159: 702224115927)  $11.70

EXCLUSIVE.  Near the Parenthesis follows up 2007's "Of Soft Construction" with "L'Eixample," Tim Arndt's most focused work to date. L'Eixample draws on inspiration gained during travels through Barcelona, Spain. Of particular interest was the innovative and sometimes peculiar modernist architecture of the L'Eixample district. In Catalunyan, L'Eixample literally means an extension, a strong symbolic parallel to the music found on Arndt's latest work which itself reflects an extension of the Near the Parenthesis' sound. While this collection begins where "Of Soft Construction" left off, it quickly migrates to an even calmer and more atmospheric experience. Through L'Eixample, Arndt has moved closer to an an emotional apex and provides even greater melodic rewards.

BITCRUSH - Shimmer and Fade  CD (n5MD: MD160: 702224116023)  $11.70

EXCLUSIVE.  Originally released in 2005, 'Shimmer and Fade' was a limited time download EP from n5MD's sub-label En:peg Digital. Within its forty-eight minutes, bass and guitar arose from the background to a place of prominence and carried the EP's melodic content. This change in form represented an important period in the natural evolution of the Bitcrush sound, a time that found Mike Cadoo transitioning from his post-industrial and IDM beginnings found on Enarc to the more ambient/post-shoegaze direction of 'In Distance.' After years of requests to bring Shimmer and Fade back, n5MD has chosen to re-release it as a re-mastered CD which contains four extra tracks not found on the original EP. ARC LAB - The Goodbye Radio  CD (n5MD: MD157: 702224115729)  $11.70

EXCLUSIVE.  Medard Fischer returns with his rather cryptically-titled third album, “The Goodbye Radio”. Representing a large step forward for Fischer's Arc Lab project, the album is structured as a musical reinterpretation of the sonnet form in which field recordings, organic instrumentation, radio noise, candid male vocals and snippets of old public domain recordings meet with the FM synthesis, female vocals and signature beatwork that made previous Arc Lab efforts so special. Thematic reference points include the Russian space program, relativity, female serial killers, and being separated from a soulmate. This diverse collection of influences gives the album a more personal feel than previous efforts as there are now human stories attached to Fischer's Arc Lab scheme. Genre specific sign-posts or “this-meets-that” descriptors are really of little use in describing “The Goodbye Radio” as Fischer has now taken Arc Lab to places where the synthetic only aid him in the preservation of great music and ideas. But, as the title may allude to, this may be Fischer's final offering. Let's hope not. An artist capable of such alchemy would be a significant loss for all of us. Let's hope the Arc Lab radio stays on and at its full volume.

subtractiveLAD - Apparatus  CD (n5MD: md155: 702224115521)  $11.70

EXCLUSIVE.  'Apparatus,' SubtractiveLAD's fourth album, finds Stephen Hummel elaborating upon previous granular motifs. Those familiar with his progression will notice that Hummel's sound has matured and become grounded in an honest and open place. As such musical growth would imply, Apparatus is the album in which Hummel appears to be most comfortable with his ideas and usage of sound. It is this comfort which allows Apparatus to envelop the listener in a profoundly personal way. Lofty classic ambient refrains, shoegaze splendor and muted broken beat trickery are all stylistic fair game. Comparisons can be made to a wide rage of artists such as Ben Frost, Eno, Namlook, and even label mate Bitcrush. As each SubtractieLAD album seems to top the previous, the anticipation is building for what is to come from this bright talent in electronic music.

EXCLUSIVE.  '"Epilogue in Waves" is the third album from n5MD main-man Mike Cadoo's ever evolving Bitcrush moniker. The album is the soundtrack to a story which begins with a sense of hope, but whose undercurrents pull you to the end you feared. Epilogue in Waves marks the end of Cadoo's “wading in the ocean” thematic metaphor for lost time that constituted the backbone of his previous album, “In Distance.” As his self described “rock record,” the album eschews some of Cadoo's previous electronic methodologies for a more stripped-down songwriting style which utilizes only guitars, basses and drums. This experiment in the basics has led to a sonically rich release that still contains those warm musical crevices to find solace in. Epilogue in Waves will please fans of previous works by Bitcrush as well as neophytes to Cadoo's brand of emotional and sometimes epic songwriting.

EXCLUSIVE.  San Francisco based musician Tim Arndt brings his Near the Parenthesis project to n5MD with the release of his second album "Of Soft Construction." This sophomore effort finds Arndt luring his potent song writing capabilities to the forefront yielding something truly exceptional. Spiraling piano sonnets are juxtaposed against sweeping cascades of grainy synthwashes and agile, yet carefully executed, beat-work. EXCLUSIVE.  Abe Dichi who's musical works are released via the Damaik alias is what you would classify as a true cosmopolitan musical entity. Spending most of his life moving between Mexico, Europe and the United States somehow gives his debut album "Micalavera" for n5MD an undercurrent of international, almost globalized, method. Add in the mixing and mastering of Mio and Valgeir Sigurdsson (Bjork, Mum, Bonnie "Prince" Billy) at Greehouse Studios in Iceland and this compounds the borderless sense of musical place that Micalavera embodies. EXCLUSIVE.  Arc Lab’s sophomore release "No Spectre" finds the n5MD imprint returning to its roots. Medard Fischer (a.k.a Arc Lab) uses almost 99.9% the digital realm to create his sonic tapestries. LAST DAYS - Sea  CD (n5MD: MD141: 702224114128)  $11.70

EXCLUSIVE.  Last Days' debut Sea brings to mind all those last moments of events in ones life. Moments which yield those confused emotions that endings and their subsequent beginnings bring. Sea has an implied lo-fi cinematic quality which makes it feel like the soundtrack to an old super-8 movie you may have stored in the attic, the only things missing are the musty smell of the cardboard box that the movies have been in all these years and the warm clatter of the old projector. The music on "Sea" is just that emotive, to conjure up such visual detail to how you are feeling. A slightly new direction for n5MD, Sea is neither strictly electronic nor acoustic. Last Day's utilizes both elements to conjure up a sound that is somewhat minimal yet musically rich, much like the more introspective moments of Port-Royal (Resonant) or Deaf Center (Type) 'Sea', is somewhat of a concept album about escaping modern life and all responsibilities that come with it. Based on mood and song titles "Sea" has a narrative running through it describing the foolish exploits of one disillusioned character as he recklessly travels north alone on a boat only to be lost, found and rescued but fearful that the urge to flee society and be alone again still remains. "Sea" is a beautiful, emotionally honest album that helps you remember all those last moments or even a way to escape them but if for a moment.

ANOTHER ELECTRONIC MUSICIAN - Patience  CD (n5MD: MD140: 702224114029)  $11.70

EXCLUSIVE.  Another Electronic Musician follows up last years 'Use' (n5MD) with his sophomore outing 'Patience.' Never one to rest on his laurels or repeat himself, Jase Rex (Another Electronic Musician) has pushed beyond 'Use' to a place where the breadth of his sound has eclipsed expectations for an artists second full-length. Previous comparisons to Pole and Lusine are still present, but only in the very ends of their reverberation. "Patience" is a very dense album, culled from 36 original tracks, 10 of which where destroyed to create 'Patience's seamless journey. While still being playable track by track the album starts with the positive urban ambiance of "Waking at Noon" and ends with the intense hornet's swarm of "Pay," 'Patience' delivers exceptional forward movement without the use of overtly propelling beats or bass lines. Something akin to standing still as urban inhabitants pass you by at hyper-speed. 'Patience' is equally blurry and defined, if you utilize its virtues you will be rewarded by the vast spaces between..

QUENCH - Caipruss  CD (n5MD: MD139: 702224113923)  $11.70

EXCLUSIVE.  The highly prolific Dutch duo of Don and Roel Funcken drop another album of all new material via their Quench moniker. Their 5th Quench album and second for n5MD entitled Caipruss starts where 2002s Dyn (u-cover) left off and hotwires the Quench blueprint for further digital mutation. Those already acclimated to their many projects (Funckarma, Quench, Shadowhuntaz, Cane…et al) will see a sonic shift from their past Quench ethos. All but a ghost of the long stretched out percussion is present swapped out for more alien double-time broken “funck” reminiscent of the Funckarma mother-ship’s previous output. Not to re-draw the blueprint altogether, still present are the long emotional pads which hold together the Funcken’s dense cybernetic beats and elastic bass-work. Caipruss may be the perfect intersection of all of the Funcken’s projects mangled together into one album. A true treat for fans of any, and or all of their projects, plus a perfect jumping off point for newcomers to this highly original duo’s body of work.

EXCLUSIVE.  “In Distance,” Bitcrush’s latest offering and first on n5MD, finds Ex-Gridlock beat-smith Mike Cadoo pushing n5MD further into a world where two disparate yet emotional elements, human and electronic, are merged into one.
