LINELAND - Logos For Love  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR070: 708527507025)  $12.00

LINELAND

EXCLUSIVE.  For a split second the actuality of language stood only to bear witness and inspire the sonic structures of love being erected around me, and in this moment I believed in principle of purpose. Only when English was interjected did I sense the imposing future and separate out the sound-scape of this melodic passing clan from the music streaming through the speakers. Logos for Love presenting a variety of acoustic instrumentation pressed into each other with modern blips and squiggles like a structure of so much brightly colored modeling clay with an illuminated jeweled interior, embracing the ancient rhythms and language over the impeding future. Malcolm Felder creates streamlined, discretely layered electronic music informed by a taste for left-field pop ranging from Bruce Haack to Bollywood, Hüsker Dü to George Jones. After moving to Queens in 1998, he began composing as Lineland, borrowing the name of a one-dimensional realm described in Flatland, the Victorian sci-fi novel by Edwin A. Abbott. Initial four-track Casio recordings grew into the album Pavilion (Audio Dregs 2003) over a three-year period, during which Felder expanded the material using music software on the home-built Dynavox 2000 computer and a growing array of vintage keyboards and novelty instruments. Songs have appeared on a few compilations and in several short independent films, including Back and Forthby James and Jeff Israel.

MELODIUM - Cerebro Spin  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR071: 708527507124)  $12.00

MELODIUM

EXCLUSIVE.  Melodium speaks; there starts a romantically slow game of pong between the hemispheres of brain. The sound speeds. I listen, and there is harmony now between the players, and reluctance towards competition. They play on. Melodically Melodium speaks. Faster, onward towards the polyrhythmic rally! All praise repetitive motion, be stilling thus Zen. The tones of play fashion an energetic path, a melodic relation of right and left. Only when Melodium pauses for a breath do I remember moments can be filled with splitting silence; that I am here and this is somewhere other then the pong game of my mind. Keep speaking. Melodium is the moniker of Laurent Girard, a rather prolific electronic musician from Nantes, France with an obsession for melodies. Weaving bits of guitar, piano, synthesizer, flute or bits of voice and texture to create patterns in sound and small personal soundtracks that are at once somber, while retaining a feeling of sunny optimism. Golden waves of sound with rough hewn edges that sound both dreamy and melancholic and simultaneously warm and shiny.

E*VAX / B. FLEISCHMANN - Postcards v.1   SPLIT 7" (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR-038 )  $4.99

E*VAX / B. FLEISCHMANN

EXCLUSIVE.  Restock. Austrian native B. Fleishmann and American artist E*vax both have a knack for fusing abstract experimental electronics with pristine and wistful melodies. B. Fleischmann's track is unmistakably his; a slow motion beat lays the foundation before bringing in a rolling mellow organ, and fuzzy clicky bits like memories of sunny days past. The E*vax track shuffles in with arpegiating tones, and sparse complex beats, setting a delicate mood before tearing the song structure apart (think Takemura perhaps?) and reconfiguring it as a new functioning pop melody. We thought B. Fleischmann and E*vax was also the perfect way to kick of a new series of split 7"s, putting together artists from other ends of the globe who create experimental electronics as forward thinking textural pop. Each 7" will come packaged sharply on clear vinyl, in a clear vinyl sleeve, with a full color postcard.

STRATEGY - Music for Lamping  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR068: 708527506820)  $12.00

STRATEGY

EXCLUSIVE.  Strategy's Paul Dickow has been a longtime cornerstone player in Portland, Oregon's electronic and experimental music community. He was once a drummer in the punk group Emergency, a keyboard player in jazz/post-rock's Fontanelle, played drums and electronics in Nudge, DJs eclectic disco and techno sets, and also remixes and produces dancefloor bangers as well as ambient, abstract pop expressions under his solo moniker Strategy. He has built up a name releasing acclaimed albums for Kranky and 12"s for labels such as ORAC (Seattle) and Dreck (London) and also by founding the premier Cascadian freedom music record label known as Community Library. For years Paul and Audio Dregs have been comrades and collaborators and now we are proud to bring you his latest offering that collects Strategy's rain-soaked chillout recordings and slow motion filtered dubscapes. These are the tracks rescued from the mornings after the dance parties and longer compositions collected from his studio in moss covered corners of green Cascadian forest caverns. "Music for Lamping contains six years' worth of music that can roughly be called ambient - perhaps "meditative" is a better word. All of this music combines my interest in blurring/expanding/clouding processes--such as granular synthesis, vocoding, and bucket-brigade delay--with happenstance sound sources, such as field recordings or a favorite record sitting around the studio. The earliest music dates to a 2002 CD that was never released, entitled Strategy At Beacon Rock, which was intended as a 'gentle' or 'atmospheric' treatment of plundered audio. The material from 2004 onwards dates to a period of soundwalks in my neighborhood of Northwest Portland (a perfect strolling zone). Taken altogether, these pieces form a traceable thread through my work where I use my usual raw materials to reach a more liquid, spontaneous end result." -Paul Dickow TRACKLISTING: 1. I Can't Stand the Rain 2. Cathedral Spark 3. Bike Click 4. All Day... 5. World Service 6. Lower Macleay

Valet "Tuesday Partly Sunny" This collection was curated by Paul Dickow together with E*Rock as a long term project showcasing some outsider ambient works and blissed-out pop from their hometown in Portland as well as friends across the seas. Emphasis was made to bring together artists from a variety of scenes and different underground bubbles of music producers that remain close to our hearts. Though many of the artists may have never previously bumped shoulders it was important for us in keeping a common thread in the musicality and a conscious flow to the collection. Ambient Not Not Ambient should act strongly on its own merit as a complete thematically unified album of exclusive tracks, not an ad-hoc collection of unrelated tracks. This is part of the reason it took us so long to organize from conception to completion and to paint a larger picture with the variety involved. We are now stoked though and proud to offer this maxed-out 75+ minute compilation of exclusive tracks at special "EP" price. What you'll find is the mellow side of sonic terrorists like Yellow Swans (Load Records) next to old school electronic mainstays like Freeform (Skam/Warp) or AM/PM (Dreck) and full blown psychedelic wizards like White Rainbow (Kranky/Marriage) and Birdshow (Kranky). Tracks by Lucky Dragons unique "sound art" style next to pop craftsman E*Vax (of Ratatat fame) float together with sparse compositions by Sawako (12k). There will be some fresh faces on the table for almost any listener (even the hard-core music nerds), for instance Smoke & Mirrors is the debut appearance by a new duo featuring Strategy’s Paul Dickow. Some of our favorite experimentalists and growling amorphous freedom rock and anti-rock have been cross-pollinated with some of best musical friends and ever expanding audio family. LINER NOTES: E*Vax "Awl" (Brooklyn, USA) At the point where the windpipe divides is situated the bird's sound producing organ, a "voice box" called the syrinx. COPY

EXCLUSIVE.  Last year, COPY (who's known as Marius Libman to friends and family) proved that geography isn't everything. Because while Europe and the East Coast once monopolized the modern electro-house sound, Portland now lays claim to its own innovator who has taken the genre to new and unexpected places. His debut, Mobius Beard (Audio Dregs), displayed a knack for morphing headphone-friendly synthpop with floor shaking dance music (...or wait, is it the other way around?) that tore up stereos and clubs throughout the city of Portland and beyond. After a year-long string of legendary, sweat-soaked live sets that invetably erupted into epic dance parties, COPY was voted "Best New Band" by the Willamette Week, solidifying his place as a rising star within the local music scene. Outside of Portland, his infectious brand of instrumental dance music made fans of the likes of Tim Sweeney (DFA), Lovefoxxx (CSS) and countless DJs, audiophiles, hipsters and music nerds alike, who found his style undeniable; somewhere between Ratatat, Timbaland, and MSTRKRFT. And with the release of his notorious "Diva Mixtape Vol.1" under the guise of DJ COPY, new life was breathed into the likes of Mariah Carey and TLC, turning mid-90s RnB jams into triumphant, upbeat bangers that snuck their way into the hearts of many unsuspecting listeners who weren't exactly expecting to roll down the windows and pump their brakes to Whitney Houston this side of the millenium. A full-fledged music nerd himself, Marius' tastes and influences cast a wide net. Citing the likes of Herbie Hancock, Fugazi, and Dr. Dre as three of his biggest influences, an early interest in music that sonically and thematically pushed the boundries outside of the confines of any specific genre has shaped the sound that he today calls his own. A deft fusion of synthpop, italo disco, hip hop, electro and pop, Hair Guitar is a monolithic release, both explosive and fragile, that simultaniously begs for attentive listening and crazed, all-night dance floor freak outs.

MELODIUM - Flacana Flacana  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR064: 708527506424)  $12.00

MELODIUM

EXCLUSIVE.  This is Melodium's 7th full length album since 2001's Italian debut and appearance in 1999 with 7” releases on underground European labels Static Caravan and Active Suspension. This first appearance is when Melodium's music perked the ears of Audio Dregs founders E*Rock and E*Vax. The latter had also released a single on Static Caravan at the time and had gotten a few of these fine pieces of wax in the mail from the UK. When they dropped the needle to preview these records they were immediately taken by the earthy nebula of instrumental electronic sound clouds that rise and descend within Melodium's melancholic compositions. Based in Angers, France Laurent Girard began making music as a kid with piano and acoustic guitar before delving into the world of electronics about a decade ago. With "Flacana Flacana" Melodium returns to his early tools, creating tracks based mostly around unfiltered guitars and piano. Working with sound a bit like a painter, his work deals with issues of shape and color in a seemingly straightforward manner, creating minute constructs in time and sound. "The aim of this album was to obtain something pure, simple and emotional...the conception of tracks is very simple, there are very few effects on tracks and all is quite natural." -Laurent Girard. "When he tells you the name is a contraction of “melodie” and “medium”, it’s not through fake modesty, his average melodies are so tastefully airbrushed, you could sell furniture to them. When the guitar edges into the sidelines, it’s pure Zen tone, momentanly recalls Japanese minimalist Taku Sugimoto." -The Wire (UK) "...consistently captivating for its instrumental richness and the affecting melancholy that’s at the root of Girard’s compositions." -Textura (CA). LULLATONE - Plays Pajama Pop Pour Vous  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR065: 708527506523)  $12.00

LULLATONE

EXCLUSIVE.  Using a tiny toy orchestra behind the whispery vocals of Yoshimi Tomida, the duo's newest CD fills the air with melodies and day dreams. Is it bedtime bossa nova... a sleepytime samba... pillow pop music with a subliminal techno beat? Of course! It is Lullatone! On their latest CD they have added more vocals to their cute, minimalist melodies and managed yet again to create a new type of conceptual pop music. As the title CD's title suggests, the concept for this album is "pajama pop". There are songs for going to sleep, waking up, sitting around on a Sunday afternoon, cooking breakfast, daydreaming, napping, having a coffee or even some milk. All songs were recorded over the last 2 years in the duos converted bedroom studio in Nagoya, Japan. And, to enhance the "recording in the house sound" the album was pre-mastered onto a vintage cassette 4-track machine for extra analogue magic. Let's float away with the pajama pop stylings of Japan's sensational slumber party music makers... LULLATONE! SOUNDS LIKE: "Imagine if Sigur Ros and Architecture in Helsinki were planning on recording an album together, but the studio they was already double booked! Therefore they decided to record it in on of the member's bedroom on his cassette player. Just then Kahimi Karie called, so they said "Oh great, why don't you come over too? We'll have a slumber party tonight," and she said, "Ok." They started recording but it was getting late and they were afraid that their neighbors might complain if they were too loud, so they replaced all guitar parts with music boxes. About that time Kahimi showed up and said "Let's order a pizza, I'm starving." Next they were eating the pizza they got thirsty, but the only thing they had in the refrigerator was milk. Milk has that thing in it that makes you sleepy, so they all got a little sleepy, and then singer guy from Sigur Ros decided his voice was too high for this project, so he asked Kahimi to sing. She did and it sounded great! And then they all fell asleep. The End." -Shawn James Seymour FUN FACTS: - Lullatone started as a project of Shawn making lullabies for Yoshimi. - The CD features a junior high school girls choir (Shawn's students). - All bass drum sounds on the CD were made from the sound of a pillow. - track number 8 (floating away) is panned in a way that listening to it on headphones while laying down is known to make the listener feel as though he or she is really floating a little (something to do with the balancers in your ears). - "Floating Away" appears as a vinyl 12" on Brooklyn's Run Roc Records with remixes.

O.LAMM - Monolith  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR066: 708527506622)  $12.00

O.LAMM

EXCLUSIVE.  "Monolith" is O.Lamm’s third full-fledged album and first stateside release; a massive overleap since his widely acclaimed "Hello Spiral". When the latter was a monumental exercise in musical genres blurring and a spiral of psychedelic, offset electronic pop music, "Monolith" is its steel technoid counterpart, a missile shaped assemblage of sounds, beats and vocals to get spazzy on the dancefloor. Pass the overture and the manifest J-pop song "Genius Boy" and it’s all beats, beats, breaks, beats, sneaky hooks and viciously overloaded electro funk, a Melvins riff replayed on a Gameboy, a tribute to Betty Davis and a Linn beatbox, an ominous pumpy techno English/Japanese lesson, softer moments, fiercer moments. Momus raps his ass off, Lullatone’s Yoshimi Tomida sings the tones of major scale, the Konki Duet’s Zoe Wolf and Nobuko Hori (Music Related) chill the blood, Midori Hirano (Noble) warms things up – a labor of love and noise for deviant dancefloors, or to take a walk in Shibuya or Nakameguro on a hot Sunday afternoon. O.Lamm is an electronic artist from Paris, France. In the last six years, he has released several albums and EPs (mostly on Parisian outsider electro label Active Suspension), and has collaborate with varied talents from the realms of electronica, minimal techno, pop and free improvisation: dDamage (Planet-Mu), Sutekh (Context, etc.), Hypo, and Domotic (Active Suspension). He is also part of multidisciplinary outfits Labranisch (residences at Louvre, Mac/Val, etc) and Section Amour (residencies in Brussels, Amsterdam, etc.), and has toured in Russia, Japan, and Europe. SELLING POINT: Features guest vocals by Yoshimi Tomida from Lullatone and Momus, who has referred to O.Lamm as one of the reasons why he thinks “France is now the crucible and cradle of the most interesting electronica on the planet”. PREVIOUS PRESS:_ “An explosive pop record littered with abstract grooves, obtuse harmonic elements and unusual song writing.” - Lawrence English (Cyclic Defrost) “Truly impressive exercise in digital processing, but it also shows intense levels of emotions conveyed through vocal contributions and clever use of acoustic instrumentation and field recordings. -Milk Factory (UK) TRACK LISTING: 1. La Chasse Aux Oiseaux (with Yoshimi Tomida)
2.Genius Boy (with Kumi Okamoto)
3. The Macguffin
4.Open Malice (with Zoé Wolf)
5.Return of the Night Goat
6.Tammy Metempsycho Darling
7.Syllabus of Errors (with Momus)
8.Silviphobia/O Meu Sonho Geometrico (with Midori Hirano)

KINN - Karlshorst  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR062: 708527506226)  $12.00

KINN

EXCLUSIVE.  KINN is a three piece band from Berlin: Guitar: Frank Schültge Blumm whose releases on labels like Staubgold, Tomlab and Audio Dregs go back to 1993, his latest album (‘Zweite Meer’) came out on Morr Music in 2005. Bass: Marcel Türkowsky whose solo-Performances as a tape-artist will soon find their way on a split LP with ‘Zeitkratzer’ Reinhold Friedl on Bremen’s Happy Zloty label. Drums: Jan Thoben who released on Beau Rivage and plays in bands like Gaston and Taunus. KINN build up analogue loops and stumbling digital transformation with their instruments and electronic extensions. They create a unique musical suction; with which they achieve a wide range of dynamics and modes. Polyrhythmic structures and tonally diverse patterns flow in a sonic stream slowly morphing into rocky passages and leaving off for chamber-club-music. On “Karlshorst” KINN convincingly integrate field recordings into the rhythm and tonality of their instrumental playing. “German guitarist Frank Schültge Blumm and bassist Marcel Türkowsky’s Kinn project follows the styles of such artists as John Fahey, Gastr Del Sol, Lennie Tristano and This Heat, with a hint of Steve Reich and Erik Satie’s looping minimalism thrown in for good measure. Kinn is a delight that recent converts of Steffen Basho-Junghans and the rest of the recent experimental guitar solo scene will find irresistible. Boosted by Türkowsky’s simple and expressive bass work, discreetly tempered with electronic effects, Blumm’s technique of allowing space to become an integral part of his playing style gives the music room to breathe and seep into the atmosphere. Rather than ending up as just another Ambient exercise, however, Kinn’s rich palette of different tones and worldly musical influences ensure listeners stay on their toes.” Kinn - Kinn CD (Tete-a-Tete) Reviewed by Edwin Pouncey / Avant Rock / THE WIRE 232.

PLANTS - The Mind is a Bird in the Hand  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR063: 708527506325)  $12.00

PLANTS

EXCLUSIVE.  Portland, Oregon's Plants are a psychedelic folk act that blend ethereal acoustic textures with melancholy lyrical beauty; employing strings, organs, flutes and bells they create a sound that's 'quietly intense', like the sound of a storm in the distance. It's their own kind of personal folk music for their an imagined world of half conscious dreams, living forests and mystical creatures. The band is the brainchild of singer/guitarist, Josh Blanchard's and cellist/pianist Molly Griffith's musical and romantic partnership. Molly is classically trained in medieval music and harpsichord and has played in the past with Portland notables such as The Decemberists and 31 Knots. Joshua has spent ten years crafting pop songs and hallucinatory electronic pieces, from the acidic Point Line Plane (Skin Graft) to previous efforts with avant-psychde band The Mome Raths. Its their mutual love of things both very old and very new that keeps the band fresh, as Plants collect ideas from modern ambient composers, 60's acid folk voyages, and ancient musical texts. Recorded one rain and whiskey soaked Oregon springtime, the group's debut album "The Mind is a Bird in the Hand" is an achingly restrained and moody affair. From the brooding opener "Acorn Child" to the closing chords of Fantasy-folker, "Invisible Islands", the record explores themes of redemption and turning darkness into light. The record hosts a great cast of subtle guest performances by Michael Hendrickson (Jackie O Motherfucker), Brian Foote (Nudge) and Jason Buehler (Nice Nice) and is mastered by respected "folktronica" guru, Greg Davis. "Plants play a mystical brand of psychedelic folk whose solemn, droning beauty and stately pace recall Six Organs of Admittance and Pearls Before Swine at their most pastoral and intense." Dave Segal, The Stranger. "Plants alchemize hazy, stoned, sylvan folk and ambient sound into warm, shimmering, psychedelic gold." Adam Gnade, The Portland Mercury.

COPY - Mobius Beard  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR061: 708527506127)  $12.00

COPY

EXCLUSIVE.  Portland, Oregon’s Marius Libman, otherwise known as Copy, busts through the gates with a fully developed and essential sound on his debut LP, Mobius Beard. Combining dense harmonies, delivered in an 8-bit baroque electro style somewhere between Yellow Magic Orchestra and Ratatat, with snap-tight digital beats reminiscent of Dabrye, Copy has created an emotionally affecting sound that doesn’t neglect the dance floor. On Mobius Beard, fuzzy bass synths ride syncopated drum patterns, jump-cutting into ambient spaces and cresting in victorious melodic themes. The result is a crossover work of electronic pop that will appeal to both hardcore sound boys / IDM nerds and the casual listening masses. A product of the 80’s, video game music featured heavily in Libman’s musical development, as did his father’s favorite albums, Pet Sounds and Kind of Blue. At age 13 he started playing in punk bands, moving through math rock and improv metal before discovering electronic music, which in turn led to the jazz fusion of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis. In the midst of this musical amalgamation, Libman developed a parallel obsession with the deceptively simple sounds of studio pop, Italo disco, hip-hop, and electro, which soon found him dropping excellent party sets under the alias DJ Copy. Meanwhile countless hours were spent honing his production craft, mingling the lush pop of Tears for Fears, OMD, Dr. Dre, Yaz, Pinback and Giorgio Moroder with the musical intricacy of Aphex Twin and Coltrane. It’s this balance that informs Copy’s debut: get lost in melodic contemplation or bounce, pump a fist, and strain your neck to the beat.

James (aka Aphex Twin) for a time. Hawk had worked in the capital for a multimedia company while making music on the side; after moving into a shared house with James, he released his first album Goon on Rephlex in 1996. Rumors that Goon actually was Aphex Twin persisted even after the release of Cradle of History two years later” -John Bush (allmusic guide).

SEMUIN - Province  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: adr058: 708527505823)  $12.00

SEMUIN

EXCLUSIVE.  Semuin is Jochen Briesen from Berlin, Germany. His sound comparable in feeling to contemporaries like Greg Davis and FS Blumm (Greg Davis mastered the CD and FS Blumm provided the cover artwork) as well as treading into similar realms as artists like The Books and Town & Country. Thoughtful and varied instrumentation that careens into new directions through digital processing, combined seamlessly in an organic manner. Semuin has made a guest appearance on FS Blumm’s previous record “Sesamsamen” and has completed a collaborative record with Anne Laplantine, who also makes a vocal appearance. “Its a really fucking great record. I love it. I usually get sick of stuff if I listen to it a lot of times in a row, but not this one... I hear bits of Takemura in there as well as Pullman, plus it has a world music and jazz flavor at times. Those are two reference points I get right away when I listen to this record, but Jochen has his own voice which is great. He’s not copying at all, Its sincere and true music thats coming from an informed place.” -Greg Davis (post-mastering commentary).

YUICHIRO FUJIMOTO - Kinoe  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: adr059: 708527505922)  $12.00

YUICHIRO FUJIMOTO

EXCLUSIVE.  Yuichiro Fujimoto lives in Urayasu, Japan. After being discovered by Kim Hiorthøy and Smalltown Supersound his debut Album was released on STSS in Norway. Kinoe is his second CD and first stateside release. The music contains a delicate rawness to it and attention all things small. A unbique character of music recommended for lovers of sound; its more like sashimi of music, the beauty lies in its simplicity, texture and quality, not relying on conventions of music practices. As well as STSS and ADR releases Yuichiro has upcoming compilation appearances on Staubgold (Germany) and Plop (Japan) as well as plans to work with Spekk (Japan). “Yuichiro Fujimoto`s music leans on Japan`s old and rich musical tradition, as well as modern Japanese electronic music with artists such as Nobukazu Takemura, Aki Tsuyuko and Susumu Yokota. One might also find influences from the powerbook pop of Fennesz and Jim O`Rourke, but there is a also a warm human touch to the music that makes you think of the melancholic atmospheres of the old masters John Fahey, Nick Drake and Eric Satie. Yuichiro Fujimoto`s music hides small treasures of quiet and minimalistic beauty, both melodic and truly original.” -Smalltown Supersound.

MELODIUM - Anaemia   CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: adr056: 708527505625)  $12.00

MELODIUM

EXCLUSIVE.  A classically trained pianist, Laurent Girard went electronic years ago when he made the acquisition of a synthesizer. With it he began creating his own blend of textural instrumentals and swirling soundtracks. Almost a hermit in his hometown of Nantes, France, his musical focus remains on the melodies, with eddies of sound and beats melding together for a sound that is recognizably his own. Two years after his acquisition of that keyboard, Laurent sent a first tape to London-based label Tugboat, then a second a few weeks later. Label boss Glenn Johnson passed them onto Static Caravan who released the first 7 inch. After a few more singles for a variety of labels he published his first album, QuietNoiseArea, on Disasters By Choice (Italy) in 2001, A Possible Way of Spending Time on Peter I’m Flying (France) in 2002, and A Slight Difference in the Air Pressure in 2003 (Peter I’m Flying). These releases as Melodium have gained Girard a recognition around the world, and with Anaemia we see Melodium’s first stateside release and his most melancholy album to date.

F.S. BLUMM - Lichten  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR051-2: 708527505120)  $12.00

F.S. BLUMM

EXCLUSIVE.  Frank Schültge "Blumm" was born in 1968 in Bremen and lives in Berlin now where he is working as a musician and a producer for radioplays. He has previously released albums with Cologne's Staubgold, Tomlab, and Berlin's Morr Music and with Lichten presents his first stateside release. Besides his contributions to the Sack & Blumm project (together with Harald "Sack" Ziegler) he is involved in the production of radioplays with Rininat Rebresch ("Rebresch & Blumm") and with an instrumental chamber-postrock trio from Berlin called KINN. Though his music often finds a welcome ear with adventurous electronic listeners his songs are spun entirely with live instruments in real-time. The sound is naturalistic and free in a way that often leaves people hard pressed to find any modern comparisons. “The german word 'Lichten' means not only 'Lighten' but also to clear, to thin, to weigh, to lift... For this album I wanted to do less: to use less words and say more, to use less sounds and use only the voices which are really needed, the ones which have a meaning, which have soul. Clarity and simplicity. Compact and compressed, To be more direct and get to the point of having said everything earlier, that I wanted to say, Without any distractions or decorations, without sound-design-babbling. Still, I think, that my music can be at the same time 'musique d´ameublement' and 'Attentive-Listening'. 'Lighten' (in the sense of 'to weigh' is also an answer to the title of my last album 'Ankern' (to anchor'), which includes another private reference: last year I dropped an anchor in Italy, I lived there for half a year, then things didn't work out and problems were faced ('lightened') and now I'm back in Berlin, able to go anywhere again, in other words: I'm looking for simplicity, because clarity is simple and clarity is 'The Best': All One! Clarity is often sad, because it arises when you part with something. When you decide! When you part with a connection to which you committed your heart to: you quit because it became clear, that everything became knotted, became complicated. You cut off the knot and everything gets light and simple, because everything is clear, clear and beautiful, sad and beautiful. The songs are mainly written on the guitar while staying in the countryside during this long summer in Italy not listening to music, not listening to noises. During my life as a musician/guitar-player I mainlyused to do Noise-Rock I'm quiet shure that this is not audible anymore in F.S.Blumm-Music, but for me there is no sense of making music, if there isn't this pressure, urgency, hunger and need which I used to express by being loud, by screaming. I'm not screaming anymore but I hope that I always kept this tension, that this urgency is still audible. So, I think that quiet-careful-shy-sensitive-music must not be equal to low tension, must not be flabby.” Longing to explain something you can't explain and go on trying to explain it forever, -F.S.Blumm (August 2003). 10/21/03.

LULLATONE - Little Songs About Raindrops  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR053: 708527505328)  $12.00

LULLATONE

EXCLUSIVE.  Now based in Nagoya, Japan, since his debut on Audio Dregs, his sound has grown into a more lush sort of melodic minimalism. The clean lined aesthetic is still there, though hardly “minimal” by the electronic standards of today. Lullatone's tiny compositions are characterized by a subtle nature comparable to the works of Steve Reich and Erik Satie, that is to say minimal, but very human. In 2003, Lullatone released "Computer Recital" on Audio Dregs Recordings. The album received much praise for its charming ability to mend unadorned sine tones into a small symphony of childlike melodies. 2003 also saw the release of Lullatone’s "My Petit Melodies" from Nobukazu Takemura's Childisc Recordings. His most recent release continues in the vein of the previous two, in terms of its gentle, cloud-like nature. However, for this album, Lullatone has moved away from the sine tone and instead used a tiny orchestra of toy instruments to reproduce the pitter-patter of raindrops. The album also features guest appearances from Keiichi Sugimoto (Fonica / Minamo), Yoshimi Tomida, Yusuke Asano (Asana), and others. In the past yeat Lullatone has also managed to appear on numerous compilations from throughout the world, and has also toured in America and Japan.

LINELAND - Pavilion  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: adr050: 708527505021)  $12.00

LINELAND

EXCLUSIVE.  Lineland (aka Malcolm Felder) creates streamlined, discretely layered organic electronic music informed by a taste for left-field pop ranging from Bruce Haack to Bollywood, Hüsker Dü to George Jones. After moving to Queens in 1998, he began composing as Lineland, borrowing the name of a one-dimensional realm described in Flatland, the Victorian sci-fi novel by Edwin A. Abbott. Initial four-track Casio recordings grew with into the album Pavilion over a three-year period, during which Felder expanded the material using music software on the home-built Dynavox 2000 computer and a growing array of vintage keyboards and novelty instruments. The sound is a more whimsical and melodic sound than you you would normally file in the "electronic" section, perhaps more akin to instrumentalists like Schlammpeitziger, Sack & Blumm, or Raymond Scott. Songs have appeared on a few compilations, including For Friends (Tomlab+Audio Dregs) and in several short independent films. In August 2001 Lineland was joined by bassist Jesse Kimball and keyboard player Roy Brooks for a live set at the Audio Dregs showcase during Sinfest in Brooklyn, NY. In addition to work on Lineland’s music, Felder has collaborated with writer Gabriel Boyer on the children’s record A Journey to Happiness Island (2001) and the enhanced-CD concept album The Textbook Tapes 2003), both on Mister Records. In 2002 he played drums on Sybarite's (4AD, Temporary Residence) Scene of the Crime EP, and also began performing with a new band featuring Elefant Records' Kelly Slusher and Marina of La Pequeña Suiza. Currently he's working with singer-guitarists Annie Herringer and Elijah McMurtrie on incorporating vocals into new Lineland material.

E*ROCK - Conscious  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: adr048-2: 708527504826)  $12.00

E*ROCK

EXCLUSIVE.  E*Rock is the founder of Portland based Audio Dregs Recordings, publisher of Thumb zine and a widely published visual artist and illustrator. After several years in the making E*Rock delivers his long awaited debut CD. Creating colorful and highly melodic electronic tunes formed from a variety of instrumentation and sound sources including, Conscious makes use of guitar, flute, synthesizers, live percussion, field recordings, and toy instruments to achieve a unique sound. His production maintains an organic quality not unlike that of his brother E*Vax. The music flows with a acoustic-electric methodology, at times very abstract, constantly deconstructing, but always with an underlying pop sensibility. E*Rock has previously released a collaborative EP with Harald "Sack" Ziegler (Staubgold, Mouse on Mars, Tomlab) and an album with his other “group” Carpet Musics (Audio Dregs), as well having made at least half a dozen compilation appearances in the past year. In addition E*Rock has produced soundtracks for dozens of projects by New York animator Mumbleboy, including a piece displayed last December in Grand Central Station. Joined on many tracks is Colleen French (who studied guitar with the late John Fahey) playing guitar, flute and vocals. Ben Barnett (Kind of Like Spitting, The Thermals) also makes an appearance on guitar. Reccomended For fans of Múm, E*Vax, and Kim Hiorthoy.

DIM DIM - Kiwi  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: adr046: 708527504628)  $12.00

DIM DIM

EXCLUSIVE.  Jerry Dimmer, the man behind Dim Dim, resides in Bruxelles, Belgium, creating his own musical universe just outside of most known genres, electronic, pop or otherwise. Refusing to get a "normal" job all these years, he was once a professional cartoonist and also professional musician who backed and produced for a few successful pop bands and dance bands in Europe. He also created video game music and illustrated children's books, but always returns to his own private world of Dim Dim when he is on his own time. His cartoons characters seem to still reside inside many of the songs. Sometimes songs manifest themselves as spacey melodic guitar adventures, sometimes frantic bubbly pieces, sometimes crooked waltzes and sambas, they come from a variety of angles, but are always recognizably Dim Dim. His love of Japanese and American culture, psychedelic kraut rockers and exotica, though not obviously referenced in the music, are not surprising. Kiwi, Dim Dim's fourth album, comprises a mix of all the styles touched upon through past efforts, while also mixing some even larger pop, electronic, and futuristic easy listening elements. The CD also contains a remix by Tipsy (Asphodel) who traded mixes with Dim Dim for the new Tipsy new remix album after discovering a shared enjoyment of each other's music. Also in this CD is an animated video by Mumbleboy, who's online Flash animations have attracted rave press from everyone from Tokion, Dazed & Confused, The Face, Art Forum, and Rolling Stone to artists like David Bowie and Momus.

INKBLOT - Love Your Mother  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR042: 708527504222)  $12.00

INKBLOT

EXCLUSIVE.  Keeping the same highly textural and organic experimental electronic compositions of last year's Language Game album (Tomlab) Love Your Mother is Inkblot's second full length release. A slightly warmer sounding record than the first, it pushes the sparkling moments of piano, guitar, bass, further into gear while keeping the shimmering field recordings in top form as well. Though highly melodic, Inkblot creator Jeremy Ballard also creates a more deconstructed album, melting rhythms into vapor and gluing them back together between bits of found sounds and solid bouncy beats. The mix of these sparse tight beats with textured ambience have lead comparisons ranging from Labradford to Mouse on Mars, creating a mood that is often both playful and wistful.

SUPERSPRITE - Color Mixing   CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR043: 708527504321)  $12.00

SUPERSPRITE

EXCLUSIVE.  Though he's spent years out and about in Portland, Oregon, spinning live sets from his sampler, drum machines, moog and various other electronic devices, Color Mixing is Supersprite's first full length release. Frontman Howard Gillam works hazy melodies from dense sonic tones, fueled by mellow down-tempo beats for a spaced-out pop effect. Though sampler is his instrument of choice, samples don't come from prerecorded sources, rather from an arsenal of synthesizers, drum machines, and programables (or sometimes the cat) spinning your head into the clouds or creating colorful dreamscapes that would play well as an alternate soundtrack to Fantastic Planet. Supersprite breathes organic rolling beats from his machines, and shimmering waves of sound that serve as a most soothing form of audio research. Produced and recorded by E*ROCK (Audio Dregs) with guest production and appearances by E*VAX (Audio Dregs) and NUDGE (OMCO) makes for a well developed debut from this Portland staple in the electronic underground.

GRACE PERIOD, THE - Dynasty  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR-041: 708527504123)  $12.00

GRACE PERIOD, THE

EXCLUSIVE.  The Grace Period are possibly a trans-city boy-girl electronic project from NYC/Boston or London/Boston, or maybe just Chris Ott, one drummer from Boston, Massachusetts who began making electronic music on his own years ago just out of nervous habit. It's hard to say exactly when it began, and what The Grace Period is and who is in the "band" changes with the seasons. The music is generally loop based, with seemingly simple production, but with a feel for the emotive warmth that is often not addressed in sample based "computer" music. (It is "computer music" now, but the sound was very similar even before any computer was involved.) Moody sweeping breaks and shimmering waves and textures keep things in a more personalized headspace, more intuitive than heady. After years of micro-run releases of cassettes, CD-Rs and 7"s, this is The Grace Period's first big CD debut.

CARPET MUSICS - Weekday  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR-044: 708527504420)  $12.00

CARPET MUSICS

EXCLUSIVE.  Made up of circular melodies, softly pulsing rhythms, and airy textural arrangements, Carpet Musics finds it's beauty in small and mundane objects that you find a block away from your house over more rigid monuments and art forms. These ideal forms are the spaces created between buildings or objects, the disposable and temporary, and singular moments created by the casting of light and shadow. Songs are usually based around one or two spiraling melodic keyboard parts, built up, then reduced, and reduced again. Sometimes they'd record a drum part with live drums and end up using only the sound that the squeaky hi hat stand makes, or the sound of the rattle made from turning off the snare in favor of its rhythmic sounds over the actual kit. Carpet Musics began about five years ago by two Erics. One Eric was playing keyboards in a new wave band (on Bongload records) and sold the other Eric (Audio Dregs and Thumb guy) his first analog keyboard. Through common interests in ambient music they began playing together during the only crossover in free time that they had in common (after 2:00 AM), first recording a limited edition CDR for ADR and then spending almost three years creating Weekday. One of Eric's main concerns with ambient music was that it would got boring for him without constant motion and melodic elements--also he didn't have an attention span for static compositions that lasted more than about 2 and a half minutes. Eric, on the other hand, was concerned with thematic issues and thought that Eric's strict standards brought the music into territory which was in opposition to what could be defined as "ambient". Coming from a more electronic standpoint, Eric was interested in making electronic music that wasn't necessarily digital. Their different methods and backgrounds kept things interesting (if not slow moving), but with a common sound form aesthetic which neither really could quite put into words.

E*VAX - Parking Lot Music  CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR-037 : 708527503720)  $12.00

E*VAX

EXCLUSIVE.  Following sold-out singles on ADR and Static Caravan and an appearance on last year¹s Morr Music compilation, E*vax delivers his first full-length effort, Parking Lot Music. The album¹s 11 tracks range from upbeat pop electronics to laid back melancholy numbers. The focus is certainly on the melodic, while each track also contains complex beat structures while maintaining a level of subtlety. Utilizing a wide variety of methods for sound manipulation, E*vax thrives on taking simple, everyday, household sounds and twisting them into rhythmic patterns. These patterns are then recontextualized and layered with melody to produce a subtle form of electro-acoustic music -- and yet despite all that, it¹s pop music at heart.

SENSUALISTS - Adaptations   CD (Audio Dregs Recordings: ADR-036 : 708527803622)  $12.00

SENSUALISTS

EXCLUSIVE.  The Sensualists have created a strange breed of music, falling somewhere between psychedelic pop, experimental electronics, and upbeat dance hits. Anna Fidler¹s vocals drift over layers of farfisa, vintage synthesizer, organ sounds, electric bass, and live drums, as well as the their own homemade electronic sound machines. The Sensualists quickly gained notoriety for their live shows and film loop accompaniment starting with house parties and eventually bills with Mouse on Mars, IQU, Broadcast, and Outhud. The second full length release is a collaborative/remix record of sorts, though not your average remix record: 7 songs are based on tracks from their first self titled record and 3 songs are remixes of yet to be released material. Chopping and mixing duties were taken by a few Portland heavy weights such as Monkey +1 (who¹s programming skills and turntable antics have also been
